DESTINATIONS : Build up your immunity on holidays

Saturday August 20th 2005

* Austria's Gastein region is home to the Gasteiner Heilstollen, a unique
(and slightly bizarre) healing centre said to be useful in the treatment of
asthma, and spinal and joint problems.

While searching for gold in the area, miners found natural radon gas, which
experts now say works in conjunction with high temperatures in the healing
tunnel to stimulate the body's immune system.

Visitors are taken by train through a 3km tunnel to what can only be
described as caves, with temperatures ranging from 37 to 41 degrees (created
by thermal waters beneath). You're checked by a doctor before treatment and
are also monitored medically during the treatment.

The Heilstollen is not recommended for those who suffer from claustrophobia,
and treatment of arthritis or other ailments requires numerous sessions. But
after just one hour relaxing here, you feel fantastic. For further
information, check out www.gastein.com.
