Letter to the Editor

April 26 marks the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident in the
Ukraine.

.The city of Pripyat and 1.800 villages have been permanently evacuated from
the  region. Still 1.2 million people continue to live on lands contaminated
by low level radiation

600.000 soldiers,and  firemen were sent to the disaster zone during the
emergency. During the past decade approximately 40.000 cleanup workers have
died

1.2 million people continue to live on land contaminated by low level
radiation outside the "Dead Zone"

4 Weeks after the accident the Milk in Wilmington De. was contaminated.All
across the United States contamination of Milk and water was reported by the
AP wire service. 

AP, 15 May 1986: "State authorities in
Oregon have warned residents dependent solely on
rainwater for drinking that they should arrange
other supplies for the time being." Minneapolis
Star Tribune, 17 May 1986: "Since radiation from
the Chernobyl nuclear accident began floating over
Minnesota last week, low levels of radiation have
been discovered in... the raw milk from a
Minnesota dairy." 

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists reported in May of 1986 radiation
contamination was reported all over the northern Hemisphere.

Today, the hastily built concrete sarcophagus is corroding and leaking
radiation. Warnings of a new disaster compelled the G8  industrial
countries, together with the European Union to raise the funds needed to
build a new steel sarcophagus. Completion date for this project is 2009
estimated cost at this date $800 Million Hundreds of thousands workers are
needed who will only be able  be able to spend a few minutes at a time at
the site, which is still spewing radiation.

No nuclear power plant has been ordered in this country since 1978. With
this Administrations penchant for more nuclear power it is time to reexamine
this Faustian bargain.
