Of interest perhaps to some on radsafe.
Why should the DOE Secretary of Energy need "timely, balanced, external advice on issues" affecting the agency?. See Item 4 below-- [From: WHAT'S NEW Robert L. Park Friday, 14 Apr 06 Washington, DC]

4. DOE: SECRETARY OF ENERGY BODMAN DISBANDS HIS ADVISORY BOARD.
He has never met with SEAB [ Secretary of Energy Advisory Board** ], A DOE spokesman explained that the Secretary, a chemical engineer, has "a science background," and
doesn't need advice. Besides, President Bush doesn't have a
science advisor, and look at how well things are going. When
Ronald Regan became President, he initially declined to name a
Science Advisor. He explained that he knew an engineer back in
California he could call if anything ever came up.

>From a Google Search on SEAB:
** The Secretary of Energy Advisory Board (SEAB) was chartered in January 1990 to provide the Secretary with timely, balanced, external advice on issues of importance to the Secretary. SEAB replaced the Energy Research Advisory Board (ERAB) which had been in operation since 1978 as the principal scientific advisory committee to the Department of Energy.
The mission of the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board is to provide advice, information, and recommendations to the Secretary of Energy on the Department's basic and applied research activities, economic and national security policy, educational issues, laboratory management, and activities and operations of the Department of Energy as the Secretary may direct. Much of its work is conducted through subcommittees.
