Let me add some more numbers.

In the high natural backgroun radiation areas in Kerala, external doses of the order of 70 mSv has been measured in a large number of houses (Radon /thoron daughter contribution not included!). This area is well known for its monazite deposits.(thorium concentration up to 8%). Over a hundred thousand people are living on this area.

Rate of incidence of cancer in high and low radiation areas did not show any significant differences. Study has been possibly very exhaustive. Hopefully all cancer cases have been recorded.

But radiation being a vary weak carcinogen a few cases of cancer can upset the balance. Suffice it to say that we need not lose sleep over a few microsievert here or a few there! Neither the harm nor benefit from radiation exposure has been conclusively demonstrated in the study.

Jim:

In Europe a skilled dentist (or his technician) with state-of-the-art equipment will expose you to about 0.01 mSv effective dose per examination.

At sea level you get about 3 mSv natural radiation where the bulk of 2 mSv comes from exposure to radon, in Denver you may get more than 3.6 mSv and in Cornwall or other areas of high natural background radiation this can approach 10 mSv - per year.

So depending where you live that ratio will vary between 300 and 1000 and any attempt to associate these increased exposures with health detriments failed so far - suggestive evidence pointing even towards the opposite, i.e., improvements.

Best regards, Rainer

Hello Radsafers,

I recently read a book called "Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity" by John Stossel of 20/20 fame. In it he makes a case for food irradiation, which was refreshing to hear from a member of the media.

Everything was going fine until I got to the part where he states "Every year, the average U.S. citizen is exposed to natural radiation equal to about 360 dental X-rays."

Now, I'm certainly no expert on this, but that figure does seem pretty high to me. So, I'll ask the experts, (you folks), what you think. Myth or fact? I'm curious.

Thanks,

Jim Bell
