Very true. Exactly.

People *believe* in astrology, UFOs, religion, the universal benefit of
free market, WMDs in Iraq, a person who calls himself reborn Christian
or the like (I remember, when that came out, whole Europe was rolling on
the floor laughing), superiority of a race, patridiotism, the 72
virgins, etc etc etc, because they *want* to believe it. They want to
believe it, not because they are idiots, but because they feel it helps
them coming to terms with, otherwise inconceivable, reality. A person
who *believes* something, because he or she *wants* to believe it, is
inaccessible to enlightenment, and will always find an argument why the
critique actually proves his or her case, and why therefore
enlightenment is an emanation of the devil. Paranoia has nothing to do
with intelligence, but is a way of constructing an infallible (through
self-sufficient logic) 'Ersatz-Über Ich', where real reference persons
are constantly failing, and as such an unconscious process. (Btw., I
happen to live only a few 100 m away from Sigmund Freud's house,
Berggasse 19.)

I would like to add, compared to the above examples, *believing* in
killer photons (ha ha, that reminds me the killer tomatoes), DU as the
evil of the world, or likewise, hormesis or 4th generation NPPs as
panacea of everything, appears quite harmless to me.
