I shudder to think of the reaction should they ever find out that life
is a contagious terminal condition (you get it from your parents), with
a lifetime risk of death equal to 1.

Good Heavens!  Isn't there some place in the universe without radiation
to which Scotty could beam us all - - - on second thought:  
to which Environment Agency spokesmen could be beamed?
