based onb the description of the 'experiment'  (larger sample gave better
results)
you may be dealing with a geometry issue....
When using smaller vial
  - sample below midplane of detector ....
     rather than 50/50 above/below with larger vial

 - sample further away from detector
    lesser diameter vial ?

  - of course, lesser H3 in the smaller vial

Geometry is important...counting light photons has same 1/r2
characteristics a gamma photon counting....

Lastly, if you're trying to detect really low levels, I'd suggest
glass.....
