I don't know about "Plato's philosopher-king," however, I do believe that 
we have had at least one "scientist president (vs lawyer)" in the US: 
James Earl Carter, Jr., who, based on a brief biography of his life ( 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Carter#Early_life ) , might have come 
close to an archetypal philosopher-king.
