Dear Prof. Raabe,
Thank you for bringing this reference to our notice. You may recall that Prof. Richard S. Lindzen is known to be a denier rather than a skeptic in climate related arguments. I prefer skeptics to deniers when the whole affair is sketchy.
He is colorful and enigmatic; his views on smoking and cancer, included at the end of this message prove the point.
Some comments about him from Wickipedia are illuminating:
"Lindzen's arguments sound convincing, but they are still nothing but
claims, popular theories as opposed to a transparent global process
[the IPCC report], a global plebisciteamong climate researchers."
"Lindzen has been characterized as a contrarian , with the implication that his statements on climate change reflect a preference for dissent from consensus viewpoints. Former student Daniel Kirk-Davidoff, quoted in Seed Magazine says " “If you want to prove yourself a brilliant scientist, you don’t
always agree with the consensus. You show you’re right and everyone
else is wrong ... He certainly enjoys showing he’s right and everyone
else is wrong".
...."This characterization has been linked to Lindzen's view that lung cancer has only been weakly linked to smoking. Writing in Newsweek,
Fred Guterl stated "Lindzen clearly relishes the role of naysayer.
He'll even expound on how weakly lung cancer is linked to cigarette
smoking. He speaks in full, impeccably logical paragraphs, and he
punctuates his measured cadences with thoughtful drags on a cigarette." Writing in the Griffith Review, Australian Broadcasting Corporation science reporter Robyn Williams stated "I interviewed Lindzen in Boston and was impressed by his
assurance as well as his cheerful chain‐smoking and delight in being
contrary. He is known to dispute links between cigarettes and lung
cancer".
Regards
Parthasarathy
