[ RadSafe ] Limits on airflow from a contamination-control area

A replacement of an old UK AECP 1054 (Atomic Energy Code of Practice) has
recently been updated (January 2009). This new document (NVF/DG001) gives
excellent information on the ventilation requirements for nuclear facilities
and covers not only permanently established controlled areas but also
temporarily ventilated areas when non-routine work is being carried out
(outage type operations/maintenance of gloveboxes or other engineered
containment structures). This is based on UK statutory legislation but the
principles are universal.

A copy is attached.

Subject: [ RadSafe ] Limits on airflow from a contamination-control area

Radsafers,

Our company is interested in industry standards for the control of airflow
out of a contamination-control area, especially in a reactor environment,
and how this is monitored. Specifically,

*	What air flow rate out of a contamination-control area is
considered acceptable in the rest of the industry? (possibilities, "air must
always flow into the rubber area", 1 m/s, 1 km/h, etc.)
*	What techniques are used to determine that air flow does not
exceed the acceptable rate? (possibilities: smoke bulb tests, pocket
anemometer, "if you can feel it on your face it is too much", etc.)
