George Mason University
Director of Laboratory Safety
The George Mason University, Office of Environmental Health and Safety is
seeking a Director of Laboratory Safety to oversee and manage
comprehensive programs in biosafety (BSL 2/3), chemical safety and
radiation safety (e.g., radioactive materials, x-ray-producing
instruments, lasers, NMR, MRI).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's of science in biohazard science, microbiology, biochemistry,
chemistry, or a related field is required (master's or Ph.D. in the above
is preferred);
- At least two years of experience in a laboratory safety field with
hands-on experience with hazardous materials, BSL-3 operations, risk
assessment and radiation safety; plus three years of experience managing
health and safety programs and health and safety personnel/staff;
- Benchtop experience in chemistry, microbiology or biochemistry is
preferred;
- Reside no more than 20 miles from the Prince William campus;
- Must successfully complete a comprehensive background check; financial
check; and medical evaluation to include being fit to wear a respirator,
receiving required vaccinations and drug screening.

Biosafety Specialist
The George Mason University, Office of Laboratory Safety (OLS) invites
applications for a Biosafety Specialist position.
This position will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of a
comprehensive biological safety program to include providing support to
the University Biosafety Officer and the Biomedical Research Laboratory
Biosafety Manager/Responsible Official. This includes but is not limited
to interpretation and implementation of applicable regulations and
guidelines, assessment of biorisks in university laboratories, providing
waste services, assisting with training programs, serving as inspection
team member, assisting with decontamination, and working closely with
various Mason safety committees to include the Institutional Biosafety
Committee.
Minimum Requirements:
- Demonstrated working knowledge of BSL-3 (biosafety level) experience in
biosafety or biological research.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in biology, microbiology, life sciences,
health and safety, industrial hygiene, another related scientific field
(e.g., engineering, environmental science, public health, etc.);
- Five years of BSL-3 experience in biosafety or biological research;
- Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biosafety Professional;
and
- Experience at an institute of higher education.
