There is much more at work here than simple paranoia.  Active, 
premeditated fear-mongering in the pursuit of personal and political 
advantage is being committed by bureaucrats, politicians and vendors. The 
end of the Cold War was a traumatic and threatening experience for many 
segments of the United States' political economy. The War on Terror has 
been a godsend to these interest groups who have leapt upon this bandwagon 
with great relish and are playing up the terrorist threat for all they are 
worth - literally.
