Barbara,

I suggest that you and your friend should take a look at Perkin Elmer's website,
http://las.perkinelmer.com/content/RelatedMaterials/Brochures/BRO_ScintillationCocktailsAndConsumables.pdf

I've used Perkin Elmer's OptiPhase HiSafe 2 liquid scintillation cocktail fluid for this very purpose with good results.

For a recently released article about this particular test see the article "Team finds link between stomach-cancer bug and cancer-promoting factor" http://www.news.illinois.edu/news/10/0106cancer.html

Subject: [ RadSafe ] LSC Method Assistance Needed - CO2

One of my friends, a new HP, asked me if I could assist him in finding a better cocktail for his SC work.  He writes:  "Our breath bioassay monitors 14CO2.  So we have a solution that we make, and we bubble the air from the balloons in the solution to trap the co2 and count it on our LSC.  This has been done for a long while, but the mixture is made up of some nasty stuff, so I just want to see if we can do better."

The method they use a toluene based cocktail:  "solution that contains toluene, sodium hyrdroxide, trimethylbenzene, and methyl glycol."
It has been a long time since I did LSC so if you have any experience and advice I am sure he will appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
