The Nielsen television ratings period includes February 3 - March 2.  The Nielsen ratings, especially for local news shows, is a factor in determining TV commercial rates charged to advertisers, and thus the profits earned by stockholders.  

One can probably expect more "news stories" alternating between impending doom and titillation.
