Quite an interesting article here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/22/science/when-radiation-isnt-the-real-risk.html

When people want to moan about the great cancer risk of radiation, I like
to point out that Colorado residents on average are exposed to a much
higher (approximately 3 times) radiation dose than people who live in
Alabama (Table 2 in
http://www.orau.org/ptp/PTP%20Library/library/Subject/Environmental/radiationbackground.pdf),
yet there is not a corresponding increase in the cancer rate. In fact,
Alabama's average cancer incidence rate is about 1.2 times higher than that
of Colorado and Alabama's average death rate from cancer in Alabama is
about 1.3 times that of Colorado (
http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/dcpc/data/state.htm).
