While rarely mentioned in the atomic bombing arguments, another reason 
for Truman's urgency to end the war must have been the mere existence of 
Japan's nuclear program.  That program also is rarely cited and even 
today is not widely known; but Japan along with Germany, Russia, and US, 
did have an atomic bomb program during World War 2
