Because  the  IEEE 754 standard is  implemented in hardware  and  thus fast?

Also, addition  and multiplication in that standard  are commutative, but not associative (so the order  in  which  you add or multiply  several numbers  matters). I don't think associativity is possible  with fixed size  decimal numbers.
