Overview



The Vermont Department of Health (VDH) is currently seeking a new Inorganic Chemistry Program Chief for our Public Health Laboratory. The Inorganic Chemistry Program Chief position at VDH oversees a wide range of public health inorganic chemistry testing services and supervises a staff of professional laboratory scientists. Laboratory testing includes physical properties and metals in drinking water, blood lead in clinical specimens and radionuclides in water, air and other environmental matrices.

The Inorganic Chemistry Program Chief is also responsible for the program's participation in the CDC Laboratory Response Network-Chemical (LRN-C) for detection of trace metals in blood or urine and radionuclide response activities. Other duties include ensuring adherence to the various laboratory accreditation regulations needed to maintain certification or approval to perform testing.

We have a strong preference for candidates with inorganic drinking water testing experience.

Minimum Qualifications



Bachelor's degree in chemistry, physical science or closely related field including at least 18 hours in chemistry AND four (4) years or more of professional level experience in a health or environmental laboratory (or related lab) including demonstrated experience in lab testing management in the areas of planning, monitoring and technical evaluation INCLUDING two (2) years or more of experience in a supervisory capacity.

OR

Master's degree in chemistry, physical science or closely related field including at least 18 hours in chemistry AND two (2) years or more of professional level experience in a health or environmental laboratory (or related lab) including demonstrated experience in lab testing management in the areas of planning, monitoring and technical evaluation INCLUDING one (1) year or more of experience in a supervisory capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. Preferred Qualifications



Inorganic drinking water testing experience

Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including grant development and management

Experience in evaluating, procuring, validating, and verifying new technology related to public health laboratory trends and practices

Demonstrated strong laboratory testing program management skills, including planning, monitoring, and technical evaluation.

Demonstrated supervisory capabilities in leading a staff of professional laboratory scientists
