Russia: Iran May Seek More Reactors

MOSCOW (AP) - Iran may order an additional three nuclear reactors for
power generation from Russia, a top Russian official said Friday
after meeting with an Iranian government representative in Moscow.

If formalized, the agreement will likely upset U.S. officials who
have strongly protested Russia's assistance to the Iranian nuclear
program. The United States accuses Iran of attempting to build
weapons of mass destruction.

Russia and Iran have largely ignored Washington's protests, saying
their cooperation is legal and peaceful, and that nuclear cooperation
benefits both countries.

Vice Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov announced the possible deal after
meeting with Iranian Supreme Security Council chief Hassan Rouhani,
the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

Klebanov said that the possible new agreement ``meets all
international obligations'' regulating peaceful nuclear power, the
report said.

Russian engineers are already building one reactor at the Bushehr
nuclear research site in southern Iran under an existing contract.

Rouhani also met Friday with Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev and
discussed expanding military ties, another area that has attracted
U.S. criticism. Iran has become a leading customer of Russia's ailing
defense industry, purchasing fighter jets, missiles, tanks and diesel
submarines.
