POSITION DESCRIPTION:  Radiation Safety Specialist, Wyeth-Ayerst Research, Pearl River, New York. Immediate opening

Provide technical assistance for daily Radiation Safety program activities at our Pearl River research and manufacturing campus.  These activities include isotope ordering, package receipt and shipment, dosimeter management, laboratory audits and surveys, decontamination, source leak testing, materials inventory, survey meter calibration and other duties assigned by the RSO.  Maintains databases up to date; creates new reports and documents as needed and maintains up to date files on all aspects of the radiation safety program. Provides required contamination and special project safety surveys as directed by the RSO. Performs surveys utilizing appropriate radiation detection survey instruments, analyzes wipe samples and completes necessary documentation.  Ensures tests being performed are accurate and comply with procedures.  Conducts and, or assists with radiation safety training of radioactive materials users.  Writes and updates procedures to document best practices. Performs laboratory audits and documents audit results. Issues audit reports to laboratory supervisors and performs follow-up to ensure 100% compliance with procedures and regulations.  Provides radioactive waste services to include: packaging of waste, decay-in-storage program maintenance and manifesting of waste shipments.
              
BS Degree in health physics, physics, chemistry, or biology with 2-3 years experience.  Certification or certification eligibility by the American Board of Health Physics is highly desirable.  Familiarity and experience with the use of radioactive materials, radioactive waste management and radiation safety/health physics in a research environment.  Computer experience (MS Word, Excel, Access, etc.) and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
