Re: Chirpers

I have found chirpers very useful, especially when working with panoramic
irradiators used for dosimeter/instrument calibrations. NRC Regulatory
guide 8.28 (Aug 1981) has some information of interest:

-Not a substitiute for, but a compliment to, survey meters.
-Useful when a worker can't hold survey meter or continually look at meter
indication.
-Provides continuous feedback to user and warns of hot spots or changing
radiation fields.

Problems:

-Worker may not be aware dosimeter has quit working.
-Dosimeter selection needs to be made relative to expected environmental
conditions. Noisy environments may mask audible signal or audible signal
may be to load for quiet conditions (irritation factor). Dosimeter may not
be water tight (water immersion, high humidity). Not only may the dosimeter
be susceptible to water damage, but also to damage caused by corrosive
chemicals.

Selection:

-Dosimeter should be designed for severe industrial use.
-Appropriate chirp rate should be selected.
-Use should be optional and never mandatory.

Other:

-Daily battery and source response checks, with a recheck if dosimeter
dropped.

Subject: Chirpers

We are looking to purchase some chirpers as dose awareness tools. If
anyone
has any operational experience (good or bad) they can share it would be
appreciated.

Thanks
