Anomalous Dose Assessment Associated With Film Badge Storage In Controlled Area
There is an interesting article in the February 2000 Health Physics,
The Radiation Safety Journal, page 226 - 227 titled "Anomalous Dose
Assessment Associated With Film Badge Storage In Controlled Area".
The article addresses anomalous doses observed on all the film
dosimeters being stored for issue in the CT console booth, due to the
opinion that this was a "no-dose, low background area.". This is one
paragraph from the article:
"By design, CT control booths are shielded not to background
radiation levels, but to a projected annual dose to workers of 5 - 50
mSv as recommended by NCRP and regulatory agencies. The radiation
levels in the CT console area are considered to be very low and might
normally be expected to have no impact on the reading of a film badge
which has been left in the console area for a few days. However, this
lack of response does not apply to the radiation sensitive film
exposed outside of the film holder."
The critical item to be assessed in an ALARA investigation has to do
with whether or not the film packet was left out of the filtered
holder, and the proximity to a higher than background area.
