You are right and the process calls hydrolysis and requires electricity.
There were some plans to used radiolisis as a substitute process by using
reactors radiation field for the free hydrogen production.
It is a BARBARIC, for 21-st century, practice to burn the carbohydrates
(petroleum products).
Our ancestors did not have a chance just to burn it to survive and to develop.
We do have: new technologies.
I do NOT know ANY other use for uranium 235-238 but just in the expansion
fission fuel cycles to produce so necessary energy. (I do not count the
chemical laboratories).
May be somebody out there can help me with that.
Is there ANY other use for the gigantic resources of U-238-(235)?
