Engineering Technician Position Available and U of Michigan

The University of Michigan's Phoenix Memorial Laboratory and Ford Nuclear
Reactor are currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of
Engineering Technician - Research. This position will report to the
Assistant Manger for Research and will primarily support ongoing research
at the Phoenix Memorial Laboratory and Ford Nuclear Reactor. These
research activities include:
Daily operations to support long-term irradiation experiments
Analysis of samples using Instrumented Neutron Activation Analysis,
Nuclide Identification or other methods including sample preparation and
encapsulations, scheduling, irradiation, and analysis
Handling of highly radioactive materials in the two Hot Cell facilities at the site
Preparation, irradiation, packaging and transportation of radioactive tracers
and specialized isotopes for research and commercial applications such
as 1,2-dibromoctadecene and sodium-24
Operation and maintenance of gamma counting facilities
Operation and maintenance of neutron radiography and radioscopy facilities
Work under an NQA-1 QA program to certify neutron attenuation materials for
use in commercial nuclear reactor facilities
Design and fabrication of specialized irradiation facilities and handling equipment
including procedures, drawings, and other documentation
Assist researchers, faculty and staff in acquiring tools, materials and services
necessary to accomplish research activities
Operate a 25,000 Ci cobalt-60 irradiator facility
Skills Strongly Desired:
Technical training in reactor plants, mechanics, electronics, mathematics and
reactor theory
Experience with AutoCAD (any release)
Experience with Canberra's Genie 2000 or Genie VMS
Additionally, the position will report to the Assistant Manger for Operations to support
sustained operation of the Ford Nuclear Reactor. These support activities include:
Functioning as one of five supervisors overseeing operation of the reactor
for 24 hour operation (days, swings, mids), ten out of every 14 days.
Support preventative maintenance, material condition improvements, and
modifications
Maintain system documentation required to ensure correct and current information
for support of relicensing, maintenance and operator training.
Participate in a continuing requalification program
Candidates will be expected to receive a Senior Reactor Operator license within the six
months following start of employment.
