Thai man dies of radiation burns

A Thai man has died in hospital in Bangkok --the first fatality from a
serious radiation leak
last month.

The man, Niphon Phankan, was one of almost twenty people taken for treatment
to radiation
burns after four redundant radio-therapy machines were dumped illegally in a
car park on
the outskirts of the Thai capital.

Scrap dealers cut one of them up, and sold the pieces, leading to a
widespread health scare,
and urgent calls for tightening the regulationscovering obsolete
radio-active machinery.

Two other men are still in intensive care.
