Most Czechs support nuclear energy - poll
PRAGUE, April 25 (CTK) - Most Czechs (almost two thirds of the population)
support further development of nuclear energy, according to a poll by the
STEM polling agency obtained by CTK.
The poll was conducted before the 10th anniversary of nuclear catastrophe in
Chernobyl on April 26, and 67 percent of the 1,681 respondents said they
considered the Temelin nuclear power station, which is being completed in
south Bohemia, to be safer than Chernobyl.
Seventy-three percent of respondents said that Temelin was comparable with
other world nuclear power plants - 45 percent of people who are generally
against further development of nuclear energy also expressed this view.

Civic initiatives launch campaign for referendum on Temelin
PRAGUE, April 19 (CTK) - A coalition of 74 civic initiatives called
Referendum 2000 today announced a launch of a petition for a referendum on
putting the nuclear power station Temelin in south Bohemia into operation.
The petition will address deputies and senators with a request to support
calling a referendum with the question: "Are you for putting the nuclear
power plant Temelin into operation?"
The problem of Temelin concerned a large number of Czech citizens and
politicians did not have a sufficient mandate to decide on its completion,
Jan Beranek from the Duha movement told reporters. Apart from Beranek,
former environment ministers Martin Bursik and Ivan Dejmal, philosopher
Erazim Kohak and environmentalist Jakub Patocka are members of the petition
committee.

Staff of Dukovany nuclear plant disagree with Greenpeace protests
DUKOVANY, South Moravia, March 30 (CTK) - Petr Spilka, a spokesman for the
Dukovany nuclear power plant, told CTK today that he did not believe the
environmental organisation Greenpeace had a reason to criticise plans by the
plant to supply energy to Germany.
Spilka was reacting to a demonstration held on Wednesday in Munich at the
main office of the Bavarian utility firm Bayernwerk by environmental
activists against the company's plans to import electric energy from
Dukovany, currently the Czech Republic's only operational nuclear power
plant.
According to Spilka, the Dukovany plant's level of safety and efficiency is
above EU standards.
