Funeral of nuclear accident's 2nd victim held
MITO, Japan, April 30 (Kyodo) - The funeral of Masato Shinohara,
who Thursday became the second person to die as a result of
Japan's worst-ever nuclear accident last September, took place
Sunday in Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture.
About 500 people, including Science and Technology Agency
deputy chief Yasuhiro Kato and the family of Hisashi Ouchi,
Shinohara's colleague who died Dec. 21 after also being irradiated
in the accident, attended the funeral at a hall in the town of Suwa.
The service was hosted by JCO Co., the company that ran the
uranium-processing plant in Tokaimura, Ibaraki, where the accident
occurred.
Shinohara's colleague Yutaka Yokokawa, 55, who also was
exposed to radiation in the accident, also attended.
JCO President Hiroharu Kitani said in delivering a memorial
address, ''Although I will be resigning (on Monday) to take
responsibility for the accident, I promise to take every possible
measure for the bereaved family.''
Shinohara, 40, died of multiple organ failure 211 days after being
irradiated while working at the JCO plant Sept. 30.
Ouchi was the first person in Japan to die from radiation exposure
in the nation's nuclear power industry.
