Washington University School of Medicine, one of the top five Medical
Schools in the country, currently has a challenging career opportunity for
a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).  The RSO is a management position that
reports to the Director of Environmental Safety.  A faculty appointment is
possible for a candidate with the appropriate academic qualifications.  The
RSO is responsible for managing all aspects of the radiation safety program
for Washington University School of Medicine and the Washington University
Medical Center.  This position oversees the use of radioactive materials
for approximately 1,000 research laboratories; for the nuclear medicine and
radiation oncology services in the medical center; and for x-ray devices
used in research, diagnostic radiology, diagnostic cardiology and radiation
oncology.

The qualified candidate must have an advanced degree in Health Physics or
related field and have fulfilled training and experience requirements
specified by the USNRC for a Radiation Safety Officer.   Must have expert
knowledge and experience with all facets of medical and research radiation
safety including:  MIRD internal dose methodology; computation of effective
and organ doses associated with patient x-ray exams; environmental
evaluation and monitoring; emergency radiological response; survey
instrument calibration; assay of radioactivity; shield calculations; State
and Federal regulatory agencies including NRC broad scope medical
licensing; and budget preparation and cost recover strategies.  Strong
communication and management skills are required along with the ability to
manage multiple projects and deadlines.
