I suggest your best response, drawing on the lastest responsible opinion, is
to cite and quote from the UNSCEAR report recently sent to this list (I
believe) and Prof. Jaworowski's' Sept 99 article in Physics Today. and his
subsequent interview with BBC.  If you don't have those handy, I or others
can send them to you.  They are official and unbiased statements of the
situation.
