Govt warned to avoid probe into effects of Sydney reactor
Documents released under Freedom of Information show the Federal
Government is being cautioned to avoid a health study of residents
living near the Lucas Heights nuclear reactor in Sydney's south.
The papers titled, "Possible Senate Inquiry Questions", were
prepared by the Department of Industry, Science and Technology and
obtained by Sutherland Shire Council.
They warn politicians to be careful about public health questions
and say that a detailed study of the health of Sutherland Shire
residents is not wanted.
Councillor Genevieve Rankin says residents want a study.
"For 20 years now residents have been calling for a comprehensive
health study of the residents in the community surrounding the
reactor," she said.
"We've always been told there's no need for a study because we know
there's no effect and yet the World Health Organisation says there's
no safe dose of radiation."
