laser surgery

Title: laser surgery

Radsafers,
With regard to the questions about laser surgery to correct eyesight which appeared on July 19th, there have been recent studies at Cornell and in London which indicate that laser eye surgery is not something which should be rushed into without knowing the pitfalls.  Studies now reveal the night vision is impared because the shape of the cornea is changed which reduces it's light gathering ability for night vision.  Also, the process involves cutting the outer layer of the cornea so that it may be peeled back and then replacing the peel.  The replaced peel does not adhere as strongly and could be knocked off by a sharp blow, thereby requiring a corneal transplant.  This was discussed on a Canadian Broadcasting radio program last week.  The Cornell opthomologist also mentioned that the for profit users of the Lasik surgery device had sued the NIH for giving a group a research grant to study the long-term effects of this surgery stating that they had all the info and that no further studies were needed.  When called to a meeting, they were unable to produce the data to back up their claims that there is no long-term detriment.  The Cornell scientist suggested regular glasses for correnting vision until the long-term studies had shown the procedure to be safe.
