The Radiation Safety Technician manages the daily activities outlined in
CMU's radiation safety program for laboratories utilizing radioactive
materials and/or radiation generating devices.  These activities include
but are not limited to: evaluating compliance of the use of radioactive
material in accordance with radiation safety policies and procedures;
initiating corrective actions and writing reports for corrective
measures; verifying integrity of sealed sources and maintaining
inventory; ensuring accuracy of laboratory's protective equipment;
processing and documenting radioactive material purchases; monitoring
purchases to ensure quantities and types conform to requirements as
designated in Radionuclide Authorizations; coordinating the
implementation of radioactive waste program; overseeing the personnel
radiation-monitoring program; performing dose assessments as needed;
calibrating radiation survey instruments; responding to radioactive
material spills and implementing protective measures; and remaining
current with regulatory standards.

QUALIFICATIONS: BS in Health Physics, science or other relevant field or
equivalent combination of training and experience; one years experience
in radiation protection; ability to work with minimal supervision;
effective communication skills; strong computer literacy, organizational
and record keeping skills; effective management; ability to interpret
State and Federal regulations; ability to pass medical evaluation for
work with hazardous materials and the use of respirators; ability to
wear respirator for at least 2 continuous hours, crawl, climb steps or
ladders, stoop, reach, bend at waist, stand for extended periods of time
and to move and/or lift equipment; ability to remain calm when dealing
with difficult people or emergency situations, to pay close attention to
detail and keep accurate records, to meet deadlines and be able to
handle "rush" or peak work times; able to perform complex mathematical
computations; ability to understand and interpret NRC and PA DEP
regulations and standards; on call on a 24-hour basis except for paid
time off (PTO); weekend and evening hours may be required.  Preferred
qualifications: BS in a relevant field (i.e., health physics, science,
chemistry, etc.) or Health Physics Tech I or II training; two or more
years of experience in performing radiation protection work.
