Con Ed to Replace Steam Generators at Indian Point 2 Plant
Con Ed to Replace Steam Generators at Indian Point 2 Plant
New York, Aug. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Consolidated Edison Inc., which
supplies electricity to New York City and neighboring Westchester
County, said it's decided to replace the steam generators at its
Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant in hopes of having the facility
operating again by year's end.
Replacement of the generators will cost about $135 million, said
Joseph Petta, spokesman for New York-based Con Ed. The company will
need to get federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval before
restarting the plant.
The idleness of the plant has been a frustration for Con Ed, which
wanted to have the plant back in service this summer to meet surging
demand for electricity in the New York City area.
Located in Buchanan, New York, 35 miles north of New York City, the
plant has been shut down since Feb. 15 after a leak in a tube inside
a steam generator released a small amount of radiation. Indian Point
2's reactor can generate 939 megawatts of electricity, enough to
light about 939,000 homes.
The second reactor at Indian Point, Indian Point 3, is owned by the
New York Power Authority. It's operating and produces 965 megawatts.
