Malfunction prompts shutdown of Ukrainian reactor
KIEV, Aug 11 (Reuters) - A nuclear reactor at the Zaporizhska power
plant in central Ukraine was switched off on Friday due to the
malfunction of one of its systems, the national nuclear company
Energoatom said in a statement.
It said the station's number three unit, equipped with a Soviet-made
VVER-1000 reactor, had been shut down at 0458 GMT due to a fault in
its steam generator system. It said there had been no increase in
radiation levels.
Fourteen years after the explosion at Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear
plant, the world's worst nuclear disaster, the country of 50 million
still relies on nuclear power for almost half of its electricity.
Five of Ukraine's 14 operational nuclear reactors are currently under
repair, the company said.
