Japan Atomic Energy Panel Shifts Nuclear Power Policy
Japan Atomic Energy Panel Shifts Nuclear Power Policy
Tokyo, Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- The Japanese Atomic Energy
Commission is recommending a new date for the
commercialization of fast-breeder reactors, signaling a shift in the
government's nuclear policy, Nikkei English News reported.
The commission wants to abandon a target that sets a goal of
generating 70.5 million kilowatts by 2010.
The commission also recommends inspections every 18 months,
instead of the mandated 13 months.
The panel is expected to complete its recommendations by the
end of the year, NEN said.
Concern about the safety of Japan's nuclear program heightened
after a Sept. 30 accident at a nuclear fuel plant north of Tokyo
exposed a residential area to radiation and killed a plant employee.
