Re: proton accelerator energy...???
There are several problems.
First and foremost accelerators are extremely inefficient devices. This
means that it would take more energy to stabilize the nuclear waste than
it put out when used. That energy has to come from somewhere.
The other problem is that the waste stream is NOT a single isotope thus
the action of the accelerator on the bulk waste would produce MANY
things - some stable - some not. Even if it were separated out to be
only one isotope - as the accelerator irradiation progresses multiple
things would most likely be created. And after that - when all is said
and done - the yield from the irradiation is far from 100% - so much of
what you started with would still be left.
Interesting theory that can achieve partial results as an experiment -
but not a realistic solution.
