Peco Energy May Buy Into S African Nuclear Project, Paper Says

Johannesburg, Aug. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Peco Energy Co. of Philadelphia
may buy as much as 20 percent of a South African project to build new-
generation nuclear plants, Business Day said, citing Thulani
Gcabashe, chief executive of the state-controlled Eskom.

Last month Eskom, Africa's largest electricity producer, said it
would sell 10 to 12 percent of a unit that is developing the nuclear
reactors. The reactors are prefabricated to reduce costs and can be
grouped together in modules to build power plants of various sizes

Eskom has already sold stakes to British Nuclear Fuels Plc the state-
owned Industrial Development Corp. and hopes to attract another
foreign investor to gain technical assistance, finance and help in
selling the reactors abroad.

``If the (pebble bed reactor) development achieves its targets, it is
expected to have a number of worldwide sales opportunities,''
Gcabashe said, according to Business Day.
