Re: Dosimeter & Surveymeter

A dosimeter is used to measure dose over a period of
time. All the dose received over a period of time is
"added together" by the device into one number. This one
number tells how much dose was received for the entire
exposure period. A dosimeter reads out in dose
(milliroentgen, roentgen, etc.). It does not directly
measure the dose rate, but an average dose rate can be
calculated from the "dose/exposure time" relationship.

A survey meter measures the radiation field present at
that point in time. It measures dose rate (mrem/hour,
mrem/minute, etc.). A survey meter does not tell you how
much dose a person may have received. It tells you how
strong the radiation field is. Dose would then be
determined by the dose/rate * exposure time relationship.

A dosimeter is used to determine how much dose a person
received while in a radiation field. A survey meter is
used to measure how strong that field is.

Hope this helps,
