Baltimore-Washington Chapter Meeting, October 24, 2000

BALTIMORE WASHINGTON CHAPTER OF THE HEALTH PHYSICS SOCIETY DINNER MEETING
AND TOUR AT GTS Duratek

Presentation: Hanford High-Level Tank Waste Stabilization Project,

Tour: Pilot Melter Facility There will be a joint meeting of the
Baltimore/Washington Chapter of the Health Physics Society (BWCHPS),
National Capital Chapter of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials
Managers (ACHMM), and the DC Chapter of the American Nuclear Society on
Tuesday, 10/24 from 6:00 - 9:00PM, hosted by GTS Duratek. The program will
consist of a discussion of the Hanford high-level tank waste stabilization
project, referred to as the "River Protection Project". This notably toxic
waste stream consists of highly radioactive and hazardous legacy waste from
the Department of Energy's weapons production campaign over the past fifty
years. GTS Duratek is providing the technology, equipment, and personnel to
stabilize the waste by vitrification (converting waste to durable glass).
The technology will be deployed on site at the DOE's Hanford Reservation in
Washington State. As part of this effort, GTS Duratek has designed,
constructed, and operates a scaled-down pilot plant at its Columbia MD
headquarters to conduct engineering tests in support of the River Protection
Project. The pilot facility simulates the vitrification process with the use
of surrogate waste material and glass formers. Following the overview
presentation, tours of the "Pilot Melter" facility will be conducted and a
light buffet and beverages will be served. The presentation will start
promptly at 6:00PM.
