The United States Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine
is presently seeking an individual to perform basic health physics

HEALTH PHYSICS RESEARCH

PROJECT #CHPPM 26-00

The Research Participation Program for the U.S. Army Center for Health
Promotion and Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM) provides opportunities to
participate in USACHPPM's on going applied research and development
projects.  USACHPPM,  located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland (near
Baltimore), is dedicated to maintaining a safe and healthful environment for
soldiers, civilians, and communities worldwide.  USACHPPM provides advice
and assistance to Army components in the areas of environmental health
engineering, entomological sciences, ionizing and nonionizing radiation,
occupational and environmental health, industrial hygiene and worksite
hazards, environmental sanitation and hygiene, and laboratory services.
USACHPPM develops innovative engineering techniques and state-of-the-art
technology to support its mission.

A research appointment is available at the USACHPPM, Aberdeen Proving
Ground, Maryland involving Health Physics.  The participant will be
primarily responsible for conducting an inter-comparison study between
field-grade, portable radiation detection equipment and corresponding fixed
laboratory equipment.

Other assignments include, but are not limited to, the following:

*	Assist with the development of a technical guide detailing advanced
radiological measurement systems.
*	Operate radiation detection equipment
*	Perform sample collection and processing
*	Involve with tactical Radiological Health Support by working in
research and development of protocols for the detection of radiological
sources and the assessment of related risks to soldiers.
*	Dose/Health Risk Assessment.  Evaluation of past radiation dose to
individuals form the exposure to a source of ionizing radiation and study of
bioassay results.
*	Participate in x-ray surveys.
*	Participate in environmental surveys.
*	Study new technologies and modalities and provide technical support
to OTSG, MEDCOM and DOD projects.
*	Perform technical consultations.


Applicants should have received a bachelor's degree in Science, Health
Physics, or related discipline, or expect to complete all requirements for
such a degree prior to the desired starting date.  Masters and Ph.D
applicants are also welcomed. Applicants familiar with laboratory
operations, quality assurance and quality control concepts, and statistics
are highly desirable. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case
basis.  The program is open only to U.S. citizens, without regard to race,
sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin,
or status as a Vietnam Era veteran or disabled veteran.

Participant will be selected based on academic records; recommendations;
applied research interests; compatibility of background and experience with
applied research programs and projects at USACHPPM and/or the host facility;
and availability of funds, staff, programs, and equipment.

Appointment is for one year and may be renewed for two additional years upon
recommendation of USACHPPM/host facility and subject to the availability of
funds.  Participant will receive a monthly stipend.  Inbound travel and
moving expenses may be reimbursed according to established policies.

Participant must show proof of health and medical insurance.  Appointment is
full-time at the host facility.

Program for USACHPPM is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science
