Death of nuclear worker recognized as working accident
FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Oct. 25 (Kyodo) - The case of a man who died of
leukemia last November after being exposed to radiation while working
at nuclear power plants in Fukushima Prefecture for some 11 years has
been recognized as a working accident, officials said Wednesday.
The Tomioka Labor Standards Inspection Office in the prefecture,
northeastern Japan, said the man, 47, died in a working accident as
he had been exposed to a total of 74.9 millisieverts of radiation,
higher than the Labor Ministry's permissible level of 55
millisieverts over 11 years.
The man, whose name has been withheld by the office, citing privacy,
worked for a subcontractor to Tokyo Electric Power Co., and he did
welding work at the power company's No. 1 and No. 2 Fukushima nuclear
plants.
The man's wife filed a request last December that his death be
treated as the result of a working accident.
The ministry has approved four out of nine such requests up to and
including fiscal 1999. But the four do not include the cases of two
nuclear workers who died as a result of Japan's worst nuclear
accident last year in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture.
