Czech Premier Says No Reason to Halt Temelin Work, CTK Says
Prague, Nov. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Czech Prime Minister Milos Zeman said
there's no reason meet demands by Austria to halt the trial
operations of Temelin, a nuclear plant in the southern part of the
Czech Republic, the CTK news agency said.
Zeman met with Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel last night in
Zidlochovice, in southeastern Czech Republic, to discuss the plant,
which was started last month. The startup sparked protests from the
Austrian government as well as border blockades by Austrian
activists.
Zeman and Schuessel agreed to set up a hotline between the two
governments for a rapid exchange of information regarding Temelin.
They also agreed that both countries will respect nuclear safety
standards which are to be defined by European Commission experts, CTK
said.
``The Czech government has the same interest as the Austrian
government, that Temelin should be safe, and if it becomes obvious
it's not, we won't operate it,'' Zeman said, according to CTK..
Just before the meeting, the Czech Office for Nuclear Safety gave
Temelin permission to begin raising the reactor's output.
