Environmental group visits uranium mine site

Environmental group visits uranium mine site

The Friends of the Earth group will visit the Honeymoon Uranium
mine project site today as part of an awareness-raising tour.

An environmental impact statement prepared by the mine's owners,
Southern Cross Resources, is being considered by governments.

A anti-nuclear campaigner for Friends of the Earth, Bruce
Thompson, says before outback residents open their arms to such
a mine, they should realise it will not inject much capital or
employment into the region.

"We're talking less than about 70 jobs for the community and it's
uncertain whether those jobs will be offered to Broken Hill," Mr
Thompson said.

"But further than that, there's an issue when you're invovled in
uranium mine that's different from other materials and metals
because of the effects of radiation.

"Part of the trick is to try and be able to provide some independent
information about the effects of radiation exposure."
