Re: Fwd: Oscillations in Thyroid I-131 levels

Out of curiosity, I forwarded the individual who is in charge of the vet
nuclear medicine here at Cornell. Here is his reply.

Lorna:
This issue sounds like a distance and location dependent problem. I have
found that our Bicron meter is very angle and location dependent. You can
literally be one cm away from the surface of the thyroid gland and have
readings that are an order of magnitude lower. If the readings are taken at
any distance and not specifically over the thyroid gland then you will get
all sort of fluctuations in readings. The other possibility is that the
readings are taken with a full or empty urinary bladder - this will also
change the activity readings thru the day. Overall, I think that this is a
machine, location, distance or bladder issue. I seriously doubt the
hypothesis presented on the listserve.
