Washington Group, Weston Win $500 Mln Contract for Nuclear Site
Boise, Idaho, Dec. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Washington Group
International Inc., a construction and engineering company, said its
joint venture with Roy F. Weston Inc. won a $500 million contract
to manage a nuclear-waste site in New Mexico.
TRU Solutions LLC, a venture majority-owned by Washington
Group and minority-owned by Weston, will manage the Waste
Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP), a permanent underground storage
site near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The five-year contract was
awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy.
A unit of Washington Group, called Westinghouse Waste Isolation
Division, manages the site now, said Washington Group
spokesman Bill Whiting. Boise, Idaho-based Washington Group
said it employs about 650 people at WIPP.
WIPP is a repository half a mile underground in 250-million- year-
old salt beds in southeastern New Mexico, Whiting said. It is
designed to store plutonium-contaminated waste from nuclear
weapons laboratories around the country, he said.
Weston, based in West Chester, Pennsylvania, is an
environmental cleanup company.
