Town adopts resolution against expanding Kyushu power plant

KAGOSHIMA, Japan, Dec. 26 (Kyodo) - The municipal assembly of Kasasa
in Kagoshima Prefecture unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday
opposing expansion of a nuclear power plant in the nearby city of
Sendai.

The assembly said expansion of the plant and a related environmental
assessment would mean ''inevitable environmental destruction,
including that of fish resources by thermal pollution'' and that an
accident would have ''unpredictable effects.''

Kyushu Electric Power Co. plans to build a third reactor at its
Sendai plant.

The town's fisheries cooperative had filed a plea with the assembly
opposing the plant expansion.
