Taiwan Justices to Rule on Power Plant Scrapping, Paper Says

Taipei, Jan. 9 (Bloomberg) -- A panel of Taiwan justices is expected
to rule as early as this week on whether the cabinet's decision to
halt completion of the island's fourth nuclear power plant project
was legal, the United Daily News reported, citing an official of the
court.

They are likely to reach a conclusion, ending a three month- long
dispute, before the Lunar New Year on Jan. 24, the paper said, citing
Yang Jenshou, secretary-general of Judicial Yuan.

An adverse ruling would probably force Premier Chang Chun- hsiung to
resign to shoulder responsibility for the cabinet's decision. The
controversy has already claimed one premier. In October, Tang Fei
quit in a dispute with President Chen Shui-bian over its completion.

Chen's administration scrapped completion of the plant on the grounds
it posed environmental risks, while the opposition Nationalists say
the plant is needed to fuel economic growth in the future.
