Re: Age determination by x-ray examinations

Dear Ted,

Taking into account that I was the last to comment this subject, I do
believe that your message was directly to me, once you didn't mention the
source. If the case, the fact is not on what I believe, but on what I have
been working for about 40 years: I am a Regulator. I was in Brazil
responsible to put in practice, and to implement Regulations on Radiation
Protection and Safety based on ICRP and IAEA recommendations, mainly.
Believe it or not we can discuss, also, agree or not agree; however the
approved Standards we have to obey and follow.
The following expressions
I see a benefit I don’t see a benefit
I understand the risk I don’t understand the risk
are among others, part of an interesting paper written by one of the "Popes"
of the Radiation Protection, Bo Lindell, "Risk Evaluation and Decision
Making" presented at the IRPA 9, that's making us to understand better
questions and attitudes.
If you are interested in a copy I can send to you by attachment e-mail

This is just one more example of the price we pay for assuming (incorrectly)
that even the tiniest amounts of radiation are always harmful. So
radiation, unlike anything else, must always be presumed guilty until proved
otherwise. And so we conclude that we should use certain less effective
fluoroscopic analytical techniques (for example) rather than clearly
superior nuclear techniques, to avoid using radiation. And we still avoid,
as far as possible, using nuclear generators for powering (not propelling)
space exploration vehicles, and instead use monstrous solar generators.

How long are we going to tolerate this nonsense?

Ted Rockwell
