Conn. Millstone 3 nuke has record run of safe operation

NEW YORK, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Northeast Utilities' <NU.N> said
Friday its 1,154 megawatt (MW) Millstone 3 nuclear power unit in
Connecticut, which will shut for refueling Saturday, had a record
run of 585 days of continuous safe operation at 99.9 percent of
capacity.

The unit, in Waterford, Conn., will shut Feb. 3 for an outage that
will likely last about five weeks until about March 9.

Millstone 3, combined with the 871 MW Millstone nuclear unit 2,
produced 16.4 billion kilowatts of electricity in 2000, which is
enough electricity to power 1.5 million homes and businesses in
Connecticut, Northeast Utilities said in a statement.

Northeast Nuclear Energy Co., a unit of Northeast Utilities of
Berlin, Conn., operates the Millstone station for a consortium of
New England utilities.

In August, 2000 Dominion Resources Inc. <D.N> of Richmond, Va.
agreed to buy the Millstone station for $1.3 billion in a deal
expected to be completed by about April 2001.

The owners of Millstone 3 are Northeast Utilities' Connecticut Light
& Power (53 percent), Western Massachusetts Electric (12) and
Public Service Co. of New Hampshire (3), National Grid Plc's
<NGG.L> New England Power (12) and Montaup Electric (4),
United Illuminating <UIL.N> (4), Energy East Corp.'s <EAS.N>
Central Maine Power (3), Central Vermont Public Service <CV.N>
(2), Unitil Corp.'s <UTL.A> Fitchburg Gas & Electric Light
Department (>1), and others.
