Japan Local Government Rethinks Nuclear Energy Program, FT Says

Fukushima, Japan Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) -- A Japanese regional governor
said he has ordered a review of its nuclear power program, putting
the future of a fuel-reprocessing plant for British Nuclear Fuels in
jeopardy, The Financial Times said.

Over the next year, Fukushima prefecture, north of Tokyo, will
examine safety issues surrounding the import of reprocessed mixed
uranium-plutonium fuel for use in power plants, the FT said citing
prefectural governor Eisaku Sato.

State-owned British Nuclear Fuels is spending 460 million pounds
($666.2 million) to open a mixed oxide, or Mox, reprocessing plant in
Sellafield, England. Cancelling fuel- purchase contracts would
prevent the plant from opening, the report said. Japan is the
company's biggest potential customer.

Chief Executive John Taylor left the company in February last year,
after the U.K. government called for a review of management following
reports of falsified safety data at British Nuclear Fuels. The
reports prompted Japan's Kansai Electric Power Co. and others to
reject shipments of fuel from the company.
